It only took Millie a few minutes to tally up the day’s business and put the money in the safe for Mr. Fegley to find the next morning. Quickly wiping down the counters, she made sure everything was tidy. She went into the back room, removed her apron, and took a quick look in the mirror that hung next to the back door. Wisps and strands of tawny hair had escaped the ribbon she tied it back in this morning, forming a messy halo around her pale, freckled face. In the threadbare, brown tunic and pants that were her normal work uniform, she looked drab and washed out. If she weren’t so clean, she could almost be mistaken for a beggar. She swiped at her hair, but it did no good. No matter. She didn’t have time to pretty up, and she wouldn’t be graded on her looks today, just her powers.
She jumped as the clock on the wall chimed the hour. There was less than half an hour left to get across town in order to make the evening test. If she were even a minute late, they would turn her away and she would have to wait six more months for another test date. Luckily, she’d saved up a whole buck so she could take the trolley.
Being sure to lock the door behind her, she ran out into the early evening twilight. She had just a few minutes to make it two blocks over to the magi-trolley line. Glancing down the street, she saw it was crowded with daytime shoppers hurrying home to dinner and the beginnings of nighttime shoppers coming out. Dusk and dawn were always the busiest time in this part of Old Nash City. The vampires who stayed out of the daylight to avoid severe sunburns and allergic reactions were venturing out and mingling with the norms and paranorms who had no such allergies to the sun. The shops and streets were usually crowded for the first hour or so past dusk.
Even as small and fast as Millie was, it would take her forever to slip through the crowd. She eyed the narrow alley to the right. The light from the blue-tinged crystal streetlights didn’t make it into the alley. It was dark and dirty. She hated walking through it even in the daylight, but she didn’t have much choice. Some things were just more important than her fear of the dark.
****
He leaned against the stone wall, deep in the shadows cast by the setting sun and the solar-crystal lights that illuminated the bustling street. This body was awkward and cumbersome. He’d used it too many nights now, and it was starting to get stiff. No matter. He would pick another from his store tomorrow. But for now, he needed to find new food—another worthy enough to fuel his body and perhaps become a vehicle for his spirit.
He scanned the crowd, using his second sight, his divine sight, to view the magical auras that pulsed around the unsuspecting people. They had no idea he was there, hunting, waiting for the perfect specimen. Of course, none of them had anything to worry about. Their auras were all dull and muddy. All no-to-medium powers. Not one bright aura in the bunch. None were worthy. He was just about ready to give up his search and move on to another street when a bright light caught his eye at the other end of the alley. He turned his full attention to the young girl moving quickly down the alley, as if she were afraid. Her magic burned brightly around her. Most people, common people, wouldn’t know what was inside the girl. But he did. Brilliant shades of purple and blue pulsed and shimmered around her. The colors of her aura were so dark and bright they were almost tangible. His fingers itched to reach out and touch it. She was brimming with untapped power. Oh yes, her power would be filling and delicious. She was worthy. He would have her.

Synopsis:
All Blythe Sol ever wanted was to be a normal girl. Yet, her dreams of following in her father’s footsteps by joining the military after graduation are crushed when nuclear war comes to the United States in the year 4006. Tens of thousands are killed in a series of attacks on many major cities, while thousands more are left injured from the devastation of the blasts, or terminally ill from the effects of radiation.
When the government offers the sick and injured a second chance as part of the Restoration Project, how could they refuse? Hoping to put her life back together after the blasts take both her arm and her eye, Blythe enrolls in the program filled with hope. She never expects that the bionic additions will change her life so drastically. When it is discovered that those outfitted with the robotic parts have become enhanced beyond the limits of ordinary human ability, normal can never exist for her again.
The Bionics become targets of the government, as fear of them spreads across the nation, further enflamed by media propaganda and political conspiracy. Forced to go into hiding or face execution, society’s outcasts band together to form the Restoration Resistance—an underground rebellion which Blythe becomes a part of in order to survive. She could never imagine that joining them would thrust her at the forefront of an imminent revolution, or that it would put her in a confusing tug-of-war between two of her fellow soldiers—Gage Bronson, the mysterious new addition to the Resistance, and Dax Janner, her best friend. Even though Gage is rapidly capturing her heart, she is forced to face the possibility that her feelings for Dax might just go beyond friendship. However, with impending war and the threat of death hanging over her head, Blythe hardly has time to worry about anything as trivial as a love life…

Excerpt :
Two years ago…
“Welcome to your first day of
training. My name is Jenica Swan, and while the media has taught you over the
years that I am the enemy… I can assure you that I am one of your best chances
at surviving from this moment on.”
I stand in the formation of
about fifty people ranging in age from sixteen to forty, watching the imposing
ex-CIA agent pace back and forth in front of us. Her polished black boots click
on the tiles lining the hovercraft hangar, and her sleek, black ponytail hangs
down between her shoulder blades in a straight line. The titanium of the
faceplate covering the upper, top right half of her face reflects the lights
overhead.
I am flanked by strangers,
people I have never laid eyes on before today. Despite the fact that I’ve been
living at Resistance Headquarters for two months now, I’ve never left my
assigned room. Turning and scanning the row of recruits, my eyes lock on the
one person here I do know.
Dax Janner gives me an
encouraging smile and a nod. He doesn’t have to speak for me to know what he’s
thinking. I can almost hear him in my head saying, ‘You can do this’! Squaring
my shoulders and holding my head high, I fix my gaze on Jenica and force myself
to focus.
“In the next three months, you
will undergo a rigorous training schedule and adhere to a strict personal one.
You will wake every morning at 4 am for chow. After chow, there will be a run
around the entire dome encasing this hideout. Not through, around… a total of
ten miles. After the run, we will engage in hand-to-hand combat training. You
will work with partners and other trained members of our team to hone your
skills. After that, you will get a one-hour lunch break. From there, you will
report back to the main building for time at the range. Our weapons supply is
limited, but what we do have, you will all learn to be proficient on. Those of
you who signed up for flight lessons will see me each day after your time at
the gun range. Every Friday, we will skip our run and meet here for lessons in
everything from using your radio COMM devices, to deciphering Military Police
code words.”
Swallowing past the lump in my
throat, I take this all in numbly. In the past, the idea of training to be part
of a unit would have lived up to my every dream. Being a recruit, a cadet… it
all felt so meaningless now when there was no one here to be proud of me. No
father beaming with pride and saying ‘That’s my girl’. No mother with tears in
her eyes. No little sister staring up at me with awe and aspiration.
No one, I reminded myself,
except Dax, who saved my life. I can feel him watching me. He does that, as if
he thinks I’ll break at any moment and he needs to be there to catch me when I
do. It’s happened often enough since he rescued me and brought me here, so I
don’t blame him. As much as my insides bristle at his invasion of my defenses,
something in me yearns for more of it. Something inside of me misses the bonds
I shared with the people who made up my family, and I want those bonds back…
more than anything. I want—need—something to live for. Something to fight for.
“Get to know your fellow
recruits,” Jenica continues, stopping before our formation and turning to face
us with her hands clenched behind her back. “You all are going to be spending a
lot of time together. Learn to like each other. Live with each other’s
differences. Get over your petty disagreements, or whatever you walked in here
with, because this is it. Look around you, people… the guy to your left and the
girl to your right are all you’ve got. We all remember what life used to be. We
all had lives before we came here. Many of you are young and probably thought
you had it all figured it out. Your life hasn’t turned out the way it planned,
but this is it. Some of you will suffer even more than you already have
fighting this battle. Some of you will die. So, you may as well make it count.
If you don’t like each other, tough luck. Forget the past. The people in this
room, right now… these people are your new family.”

Excerpt One
This excerpt is a scene from one of Toby’s
dream sequences:
Was this another dream? Who would visit him in this dream?
As if in answer to his question, a large pack of wolves and dogs
slowly materialized out of the enshrouding gray and one-by-one encircled him.
The snow stopped falling. All was still and quiet.
A long, wailing howl pierced the silence.
Followed by another.
Then another.
After a few moments, a chorus of howls erupted from the group that
now surrounded Toby. A primordial urge rose within him. He stood up and shook
off the light layer of snow that had accumulated on his fur. The urge grew
stronger, more compelling, until he realized his own voice had joined the
others. The multitude of voices became one as they howled on and on, until the
cry reached its crescendo and abruptly ended, leaving an echoing silence around
them once again.
A large, white figure approached Toby.
“Welcome to our pack, Toby.” The figure turned, and with a nod of
his head, indicated the others. He turned back to Toby. “How did you come to be
here?”
Toby
tried to find his voice, but the howl still reverberated in his throat. When he
finally spoke, his reply was weak and raspy. “I don’t know. I don’t even know
where here is.” He hesitated, and then asked, “How do you know my name?”
“My name is Strider, Toby. I am your grandfather.”
Strider! The memory of lying with Tara next to his mother as she
told them the story of Sadie and Strider came flooding back to him and he felt
a warmth of emotion flow through his body.
“Where is this place? How did I get here?” Toby asked.
Strider paused in thought for a moment, and then replied, “This
land is a different place for different creatures, yet it is the same place for
all creatures. For us,” Strider swept his large head around him, “this is the
place we call home.”

(Caspian Wine Series, Book Two – Standalone but is a Sequel/Companion Novel to Captured Lies)
"I could get my dad to help if money is an issue?"
"God, no!" The words were spit out at her almost before she was done saying anything.
"Okay. I just–"
"I know. You want to fix it like you do everything. Just leave it alone Tarin. Okay?"
Tarin nodded but was taken aback by Bobbie's forceful, hard tone. Just then Bobbie's phone rang.
"Dammit. It's Mom. I'll be a while."
"No worries. I'll figure out something for this afternoon." She watched as her friend walked out of her room, already talking away. She hated to see her so upset. Her mom was something else though. Tarin had always thought she was a very selfish woman. Everything was always about her and what she needed. She'd rarely come to visit Bobbie and when she had she'd done nothing but complain about her life and gossiped about everyone else.
Tarin gasped. If Mrs. Benson told her dad, he'd know. If she asked for help for Bobbie, he'd know.
How did my life become such a mess?
She had to get answers before her dad discovered anything about what was happening in her life. There was no way he was aware of the mess she was in and there was no way he knew he had a grandson. If he had, he would have taken control of everything but more importantly he'd have taken Chance and raised him like the son he'd always wanted.
She jumped out of bed almost in a panic. Her dad couldn't find out about her and what she was up to. Not yet. If Bobbie's Mom talked...
Chance's squeal of delight from the other room, where he was being entertained by Kim, was like a beacon pulling her back from the edge.
She had to do something. The pamphlet for a wine tour she'd seen on Bobbie's table, came to mind. There was no reason she couldn't go and take a look around at Caspian Winery. She might as well do something. She'd moved across the country to get answers. Maybe she'd get lucky. She rolled her eyes at that thought, as she really had no idea what she was looking for or what she hoped to gain by going there. If she could get near a computer maybe she could get some information.
She fell back against the wall, surprised by what she was thinking. She, who had never stolen a thing in her life, although she'd been falsely accused once, which had ended disastrously, was thinking of actually going and stealing something... something that really could land her in jail.
