Sometimes the past should stay there…

“OMG! Violated by Carolyn Arnold has been the most thrilling and exciting story that I have read in the longest while. I can’t believe that I have never heard of this author before now…. This is the fifth book in the [Brandon Fisher FBI series] and there is no need to read the previous books prior to reading this one. However, I can assure you that after reading Violated, you will be clamoring to get your hands on the other books in the series.”
Totally Addicted to Reading

Do you have regrets over some decisions you’ve made and wish that you could go back and change things? Or do you have a hard time letting go of the past? FBI agent Paige Dawson has been dealing with a hurt inflicted over twenty years ago, but the wound hadn’t even scabbed over when a turn of events has it reopen.

Just like a lot of college students, she had a wild spring break vacation in Cancun, but it got too far out of control. Her close friend was drugged and raped by three guys. The violation destroyed a young girl’s life and a suicide attempt left her in a vegetative state for most of her adult life up until recently when the girl’s mother made the call to pull the plug. The funeral is enough to drown Paige in guilt and the past overwhelms her.

If only she had seen the rape coming so she could have stopped it. If only she could have done more and had the boys held accountable years ago.

But as a college student there was only so much Paige could do, and even as time passed by as an FBI agent, any leads on their identification met with a dead end. So when Paige finally gets a solid lead to follow, she throws caution to the wind and sets out to California on “vacation,” her new boyfriend in tow. But she gets far more than she’d planned on… The man she intended to confront turns up brutally murdered. And, Paige, well, the local police peg her as the killer.

Violated shows the importance of living in the now without obsessing over the past and what can happen when we give the past power over us. This book also touches on a modern-day topic (one I can’t reveal without spoiling the book), and conveys the deeper message that we all have the right to be true to ourselves regardless of society’s approval or disapproval.

Can Paige figure out these life lessons, though, before her career is destroyed along with her future? I invite you to board a jet to California and find out. Go ahead, no passport required.

Book Overview:Sometimes the past should stay there…The murder is one of the most heinous FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher has ever seen. But that’s not why he and two members of the team are rushing to California. The Bureau is interested because the prime suspect is one of their own, Paige Dawson.

But Paige didn’t go to Valencia to kill anyone. She had set out on “vacation”—her new lover in tow—only to confront the man who raped her friend twenty-some years ago. While the hands of the law are tied, she wants him to face the fact that he destroyed a young woman’s life and know that, as an FBI agent, she’ll be watching his every move. Yet, instead of accomplishing her goal, she wound up in the back of a police cruiser.

Now Paige must face off with a hard-nosed detective determined to stick a murder charge to a fed. But with the trained eyes of the FBI on the case, it’s becoming more and more obvious that the evidence lends itself to a serial killing, not an isolated incident. And as long as the local authorities are focused on Paige, the real murderer is still out there, possibly waiting to strike again…

Excerpt from Elsekind by Celeste Hollister:

Kex and Hailan

Kex curled her knees tight against her chest. She breathed in slow, deep breaths. Her weapon felt cold beneath her palm. Rough boards rasped against her cheek as she pressed her face to the floor. Muffled footsteps approached – barefoot, if she had to guess. She tightened her fist around the weapon and waited. The angle was wrong, but she was too small to overpower him in a close fight. She would rely on quickness and the element of surprise. He would never think to find her here.
Her pulse quickened as the footfalls paused. The door opened on a well-oiled hinge. A sphere of lamplight revealed two hairy ankles, and – just as she hoped – two naked feet. Kex drew a breath and waited.
Closer, she thought. Come closer. I dare you.
Lamplight and legs loomed nearer but still out of reach. The lamp's handle squeaked as he set it upon the table. Then he turned and shuffled forward, giving her an unpleasant glimpse of his toenails. Inches away, then half-inches, then precisely where she wanted him.
Kex lashed out, stabbing down into the top of his foot. He howled and hopped – as she hoped – and she kicked out, her heel connecting with his ankle, knocking his other foot out from beneath him.
He scrabbled to his side, quick for his size, but by then she had used his own leg to haul herself from beneath the bed. She vaulted astride him, pressing her weapon to his freshly-shaven throat.
            “Where is it?” she hissed.
Eyes wide, he glanced from her to the weapon pressed into his neck.
“Oh, by the Saints,” he moaned.
She bore down, sinking it deeper into his skin. “I asked you a question.”
He stammered, then refocused. “Is that a fork?”
“Aye.” The skin blanched around the tines as she leaned her weight into it. “I can make you bleed with a fork.”
“I think you already did,” he whined. She noted that he lay very, very still as he said, “C'mon, Kex, what's this about?”
She narrowed her eyes. “Don't play around, Hailan Chase. You know well what I want.”
“Nope.” Hailan carefully shook his head. “Not me.”
“I may not kill you with this,” Kex said through her teeth. She bore down enough to make him squirm. “But I will maim you – four perfect little cuts – and everywhere you go, from this day forward, everyone will know that Lady Kex took you down with a utensil.”
“Oh, Lady, is it?” Hailan said.
“Don't change the subject,” she said. “Where is my book?”
            “Hmm... Book?”
“The Codex, damn it. Where is it?”
Hailan raised his hands. “Xylo has it.”
“Your sister?” Kex clicked her tongue.
            “She's awful clever.”
            “She's eight.”
Kex felt his weight shift. She knew this maneuver. If he thought he was going to roll her, she had to ensure he was too frightened to try. She flicked her wrist, caught the fork with her left hand, and positioned it above his eye.
His dilating pupils told her all she needed to know. He wouldn't be moving. He might not dare to breathe.
“It is my Mother's book,” Kex said. “I want it back.”
Hailan swallowed several gulps of air. “She's a curious girl, my sister. You're the only Elsekind she's ever seen.”
Kex hissed through her teeth. Hailan cringed.
            She said, “Xylo's seen Alusians.”
“That's different,” he said. “You're different. I mean, not different, not like Halfkin different, but you're not the same.” He moaned. “You know what I mean.”
Kex eased back but kept the fork pointed at his face. Yes, she knew what he meant. All too well. “With my permission, Xylo may borrow any object in my possession. But you will not take them without asking. Nod if you understand.”
Hailan nodded. He looked like he might be sick.
“Go now and fetch it back,” Kex said. She got to her feet and moved to the door. “I will meet you and Aralund on the pitch in one half hour.”
Hailan massaged his neck. As she opened the door, he said, “Kex, I was only playing.”

Though she saw his sincerity, she could not afford to soften. She said, “I know that. Which is why you I leave you unharmed.” With a smirk, she added, “Well. Mostly.”

Excerpt from Tarnished:
“You came,” I said. “Of course.” He closed the distance between us in a heartbeat.
Standing before me, he reached out and stroked the blunt ends of my hair.
“As I was walking down here, I wondered if maybe I’d dreamed you. If it wasn’t real. But here you are.”
With his thumb and his forefinger, he gently lifted my chin and pressed his lips to mine. His mouth moved slowly, tenderly. Time slowed. Melted. Broke away. The moments stretched, as fluid as water, flowing forward: a drop, a river, an ocean, until I was suspended inside it. Lost.
He pulled away and the world rushed back into focus, time crashing down around us.
“Your father—” I said.
He shook his head. “Don’t worry. He won’t follow me out here. No one will.”
“But inside... He knew!”
Penn shook his head. “He has the house bugged. He lis- tens to everything: all my phone calls, all my conversations. He has a chokehold on me, but it’s safe out here.”
“What about those men?”
“His henchmen?” Penn chuckled, but it was a sad sound. “They won’t come, either. I’ve been coming out here almost every night since he hired them. They’re lazy. They got sick of following me after the first few nights. Once they realized that I was just coming out here to sit, they gave up.”
He pulled me into him again, holding me so tight against his chest I could feel the thrum of his heart against my cheek.
“I can’t believe you’re really here,” he said. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.” I looked up at him and he turned away, his face contorting. “I thought about trying to come to you a thousand times, but I didn’t know how. My dad is watching the borders and I think he almost expected me to go running after you. But he never could have dreamed that you’d come back.”
“I came as fast as I could,” I said. “I saw you on TV. You looked so...” What could I say? So beaten down? So empty? “But how? It’s hundreds of miles and...” His voice trailed off and he shook his head.
There was so much to tell him about: My escape from the refugee center, the train, the horrible things I’d seen in the black markets.
“There’s no time now, but I promise, I’ll tell you later.”
He sighed. “At least I got this chance to hold you one more time. To touch you. But you can’t stay. It’s too dangerous. If my dad knew you were here—”
“What has he done to you?” I ran my fingers through his cut hair. Even after he’d been sleeping on it, it looked too groomed, like his father had managed to suck the wildness right out of the top of his head.
“I’m fine,” he said. “I can handle it as long as I know you’re okay.”
“But I’m not okay without you.” He closed his eyes. He wasn’t okay either.

“Come with me,” I said.

Book Description:

Most people do not carry the fate of the world on their shoulders. Sam Greenhut does.
By the year 2230, the world is no longer dependent on fossil fuels. All power is harnessed directly from the Earth’s core. A clever integration of neural technology and wireless energy gives rise to the Global Network (GNET), revolutionizing society. Diverse industries operate efficiently under the umbrella of a neurally connected world economy, powered by an unlimited geothermal fuel supply controlled not by Presidents, Sheikhs nor Monarchs, but by a Corporate Federation run by seven individuals.
This is the state of the world when the Corporate Federation charges Sam Greenhut with ensuring GNET’s unquestioned reliability and integrity.
Sam sees a world whose population is totally dependent on GNET, as if the previously admired trait of self-reliance was weaned from the gene pool. Inevitably, the insatiable demand for energy prompts a reckless decision by Corporate Federation board members to expand the geothermal energy lattices. Despite Sam’s protest, the choice to exceed the cautionary “Greenhut Limits” precipitate a string of earthquakes that destroy GNET and plunges the planet into the chaos known as “The Upheaval.”
What happens next fundamentally alters the destiny of the planet and catapults Sam into the center of The Seed – book one in my science fiction trilogy, Future’s Edge.

Excerpt:
…“Let’s not make a scene. You’re being detained for improperly distributing proprietary business information. Your neural fingerprint has been disabled and you no longer have access. Please follow me.”
After delivering these words in a calm, professional manner, Bill Strong waited. He was a formidable physical specimen with a chiseled physique, sharp eyes, and a calm, but overtly suspicious demeanor. What made Bill intimidating was not his physical appearance as much as his reputation for being able to out-think and out-guess an adversary. If you did something wrong and found yourself in Bill’s sights, there was no escape.
Despite Bill’s presence, the perpetrator made a mad dash to escape.
Is he stupid? How crude to try to make a run for it. He’s easy to track. He’s now in Sector 18b.
Bill smoothly cycled through a series of neural commands.
Shield enable, Sectors 25a through 27jGot himNarrow the fieldGoodSecurity breach file 343, pick up perp held in Sector 26f. He’s in the pocket.
Bill was delighted to have finally found the source of the recent information leak. Wheeler was careful about sensitive information being revealed to the public, especially when it had to do with rates of world energy consumption. With corporate security on the way to pick up the suspect, Bill started back to his office, encountering Sam making his morning rounds at the NCC.
“Hey buddy, how are things going this fine day?” asked Sam, congenially.
“We found our leak. Just waiting for Security to get him.”
“Good job. Who was it?”
“Peter Gilles,” said Bill.
“You suspected him for a while. Were there any problems?”
“Well the dammed fool made a run for it. I don’t know what he expected to accomplish, but I think all the excitement is over. Have him held in a security pocket.”
“Well, now I’ll have to replace him. Too bad. It’s not easy finding someone with his expertise,” Sam lamented.
“I could never figure out why you needed someone with experience in sonic phenomena,” remarked Bill.
“Whenever something goes wrong here, many alarms go off. I was never happy with the way they sounded. We hired Peter to design an assortment of sounds that would help us identify the type of problem we’re experiencing more intuitively. It’s quite subtle, but we found it helps improve response time. Now we’ll need someone else to finish this work. Damn difficult finding people with this skill. Took us over two months to find Peter,” replied Sam.
“Hey, Bill,” said Sam, changing the subject. “When we get another day off, can you join me on Deliverance?”
“I normally wouldn’t miss a chance to be on Deliverance, but it’s a busy time for me now. Can’t Jeff help you out? He lives on the boat.”
“No, we need to change some of the lines and check rigging tension. I need muscle for this type of work. It’s the one thing Jeff can’t do.”
“Okay Captain. I’m in. After that last sail, I’m not surprised to hear some work is needed.” Bill paused. “Sam, I love being on Deliverance. It’s the only place I can let my guard down. You know me – always paranoid.”
“That’s why you’re good at your job. Always thinking of what could go wrong. Anyway, I’m glad you’re part of the crew.”
“Me too. Sailing is so therapeutic. It helps me learn to trust others. Too often I feel defensive –I can never let my guard down.” Bill changed the subject. “I have to get back to my office. Need to file the report on Peter. Care to walk with me?”
“Sure. I have some time. Let’s go.”
Bill stops in his tracks. “Wait!” Report. “Son of a bitch. He somehow breached the security pocket and is on the loose again. We’re having trouble tracking him. I’ll meet you in my office. This shouldn’t take too much longer.”
Sam looked at Bill. He had the face that showed he was deep in neural interactions. Sam referred to it as the “neural face.” Better let him do his job, Sam thought.
Once again, Bill resumed his neural interactions.

Excerpt  from Kindling Flames: Granting Wishes

“What’s your name?” the man asked. His voice was pleasant and warm with a bit of an accent that Cathren could spend hours listening to under other circumstances.
“Cathren,” she informed him as she pulled on the smile she used for difficult customers.
“Cathren.” The man repeated her name with a bit of a roll in the ‘r’. “Such a fitting name.” His eyes twinkled with merriment before getting serious. “Well, Cathren, my name is Patrick, and I don’t know how you’ve done it, but you caught me. Now what do you want?” Patrick leaned his elbow on the counter. The corner of his mouth turned up in amusement.
“What?” Cathren asked, confused.
Patrick pushed the sleeve of his sweater up and showed her his forearm. A bloody fingerprint stained his skin. “What do you want?” he asked again, holding the toned arm out for her to see.
“I am so sorry.” Cathren gasped as she pulled out some paper towels from under the counter. Squirting some hand sanitizer on them, she wiped her blood off his arm. The blood had perfectly covered a small tattoo of a shamrock. It was an odd place to put the clover—seeing as he had no other tattoos—and she couldn’t have hit it more exactly if she tried.
“It’s fine, lass.” The man pushed her worrying hands away and glanced at the tattoo on his arm. “Looks like you get three.” He looked back up at her. “Now, what do you want?”
Cathren just shook her head, not understanding him. “What do you mean?”

Patrick let out a resigned breath. “Traditionally, when you catch a leprechaun, they have to barter for their release.” A wry smirk slipped across his face. “And since I couldn’t stop the magic from settling, it looks like I’m going to be held to that tradition. It’s just turned into your lucky day. You get three wishes. Now, what do you want?”
